Sun City club promotes literacy
Sun City MacDonald Ranch Literary Guild members are doing more than just enjoying retirement in a beautiful setting; they volunteer their time and talent to help teach youngsters how to read and the value of books. Members donate several hours each week to pupils at Robert Taylor Elementary School in Henderson.
"It's great to have these volunteers," first-grade teacher Cinda Kohls said. "There's just so much to do, I appreciate the help. The volunteers are so patient, loving and consistent with the children. It means a lot to us."
Sitting in circles on little chairs, children in reading groups led by Literary Guild volunteers respond with pride and laughter when they read a passage correctly.
"There is a strong need for tutors and teaching assistants," volunteer Joyce Sarch said.
Sarch moved from New York to the age-qualified community for the lifestyle it offers.
"Our participation as both tutors and role models enriches the lives of children who really need the assistance," Sarch said.
Adele Van de Houten and Phyllis Abraham also volunteer as tutors at the school.
"We've adopted the Robert Taylor School," Sarch said. "In fact, last fall the entire Sun City MacDonald Ranch community donated school supplies and books."
The Literary Guild is one of more than three dozen clubs and activities available to residents. It meets in the Desert Willow Community Center and manages a lending library for residents.
Nine models are offered, ranging from 1,020 to 2,014 square feet.
Homes are priced from the $120,000s to mid-$190,000.
To visit the development, take Lake Mead Drive to Green Valley Parkway, go south to Horizon Ridge Parkway and turn east.
Models are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
