Three public schools under construction in Summerlin

Three public schools are under construction in Summerlin, and scheduled to be open for the 2000-2001 school year.
Slated to open in August are Sig Rogich Middle School and D'Vorre and Hal Ober Elementary School. Ethel W. Staton Elementary School will open in January. Meantime, Staton pupils will attend class in portable classrooms on the campus of John W. Bonner Elementary School.
"Despite the fact that we will begin the school year in temporary surroundings, Staton Elementary School is already up and running," Mark Christensen, principal at Staton, said. "Faculty members and administrators are already in place."
The new schools will bring the number of public schools in Summerlin to eight, according to Stew Gibbons, executive vice president of The Howard Hughes Corp.
"Obviously, schools play a major role in Summerlin, as they do in any community," Gibbons said. "To manage the unprecedented growth of our community, The Howard Hughes Corp. has worked diligently with the Clark County School District to facilitate school development. We are pleased that Staton Elementary School, originally scheduled to open in 2003, has been fast-tracked to open two years earlier."
Rogich, the second public middle school in the master-planned community, is located in The Arbors village, adjacent to Palo Verde High School. Ober is in The Willows village and Staton is in The Arbors village; they are Summerlin's fourth and fifth public elementary schools.
The community also has six private schools, with an additional two scheduled to open this fall.
"Schools are at the heart of any community," Gibbons said. "In addition to places of learning, they are gathering spots and serve to connect residents to each other and to the overall community. We will continue to work with Clark County School District and to develop a variety of private educational facilities in order to provide Summerlin residents a wide range of educational options."
Summerlin is comprised of villages, each with its own major park or golf course.
Housing options include single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums. Prices range from $90,000 to $700,000. Custom-home sites range from one-quarter acre to one-third acre and are priced from $90,000 to $300,000. Predesigned custom homes are priced from $500,000 to more than $1 million.
Community amenities include two Tournament Players Club golf courses plus six other courses, 10 major parks, more than 40 neighborhood parks, shopping centers, medical centers and business parks. More than 250 model homes are open.
To visit, take Summerlin Parkway to Town Center Drive and turn north, then turn east on Hillwood Drive. Or, take Sahara Avenue to Blue Willow Lane, west of Hualapai Way, and turn south. Both centers are open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
