Longtime Summerlin residents know community's schools
Mark and Cary Hutchison have been sending their six children to school in Summerlin since the master-planned community's first public elementary school, Lummis, opened in 1993. This school year, the couple's children, who range in age from 4 years to 16 years, will attend three different Summerlin schools: Lummis Elementary, Becker Middle School and Palo Verde High School. Mark Hutchison said The Howard Hughes Corp., which developed Summerlin, promised home buyers a family-oriented community when he and his family bought a home there in 1992. "We bought into that plan and we have never been disappointed," he said. "(Hughes Corp.'s) dedicated resources improve the quality of education for Summerlin children. The company's commitment to true community building is demonstrated through its actions." Since the community's inception, Hughes Corp. has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the building of schools and funding of educational programs. In 1997, company executives and community leaders established the Summerlin Children's Forum, a grant program designed to provide educational opportunities and access to technology, literature, art and occupational programs for Summerlin children and their families. Cary Hutchison is delighted with her neighborhood's location. "Our children can walk to school, our church is right up the street and our neighbors are some of our best friends," she said. "There isn't a better place for us to live than Summerlin." Currently, the community is home to 16 public and private schools. Two additional public elementary schools will open for the 2004-2005 school year. Summerlin aligns the the western edge of the Las Vegas Valley and is comprised of villages.
