Magazine recognizes Lake Las Vegas course
Golfers at Lake Las Vegas Resort's Reflection Bay Golf Club have been praising the Jack Nicklaus design since it opened in May 1998. The December 1999 edition of Golf Digest has confirmed what golfers already knew by naming it one of the "Best New Upscale Public Courses."
Featuring the top 10 best new public courses in the country, the Nicklaus-designed golf club ranked sixth on the list. Upscale courses were designated as having maximum green fees of more than $50.
More than 700 nationwide panelists played and evaluated 90 candidate courses that had opened between May 1, 1998, and April 30, 1999. Panelists rated the courses for shot values, design variety, memorability, aesthetics and walkability. Panelists also evaluated public courses for playability.
"It is an honor for Reflection Bay Golf Club to be named to such a prestigious list," John Herndon, director of golf, said. The course is Nicklaus' first in Nevada.
Featuring fairways of sodded Tifway II hybrid bermuda and greens of Crenshaw Bentgrass, this 7,261-yard, par-72 course was sculpted from the desert's natural contours and framed by the 320-acre Lake Las Vegas. The course, the first of four planned 18-hole courses at the resort, offers five tee settings, strategic bunkering and plays around arroyos.
Proposed facilities on the lake's northern shore include hotels, European-style gaming, spas, a retail village and restaurants.
The Reflection Bay Golf & Beach Club offers a pro shop and waterfront La Chandele at Reflection Bay restaurant on the northern shore.
The resort's first hotel, Hyatt Regency Lake Las Vegas Resort, is scheduled to open in mid-December. The Mediterranean-style hotel will feature two-story windows, loggias, ornamental ironwork, tiled rooftop, fountain courtyard, and a two-story lobby overlooking the lake.
On the northern shore, MonteCatini offers multi-acre home sites for $2 million to $5.8 million.
Also available is Sorrento, a gated home-site development with sites offering fairway views of the Reflection Bay Golf Club. Home sites range from one-quarter acre to more than one-half acre and are priced from $265,000.
On the opposite side of the lake is the gated SouthShore development. Residents have access to hiking, fishing, sailing and the SouthShore Yacht & Beach Club. The Mediterranean-style development is priced from $310,000 to $1.75 million.
The third phase of the five-phase, 72-home PortaCielo neighborhood is under way. Three floor plans are offered, ranging from 2,460 to 3,500 square feet. Prices start at $480,000.
