Weather lures Oregonians to Sun City Anthem

A desire for warmer weather drew Jim and Francie Marrs to Southern Nevada after their retirement last fall. The couple had been residents of Lake Oswego, Ore.

"We loved (the community) from the first day," said Jim Marrs, a former service director for a heavy-duty vehicle manufacturer.

Francie Marrs, a former human resources manager, agreed.

"The fitness center attracted us, and we joined the hiking club. We are outdoor people and love the sunshine," she said. "It's easy to have fun here. We wanted to be in a community where we could develop a social life. Everyone at Sun City Anthem is looking to have a good time."

The Marrs purchased the Patriot floor plan and added a casita. The home measures 1,675 square feet with two bedrooms and a den. It also features a patio and two-car garage.

"This house is a good size," Francie Marrs said. "It has plenty of living space without being huge, and the casita gives us the ability to have friends and relatives visit. It's perfect for us. It has a real nice view, especially of Red Rock to the northwest."

The couple enjoy walking their dog, Bridgett, around the neighborhood, and participate in watercolor and Spanish classes.

Central to the age-qualified community is Anthem Center, which offers fitness, social and recreational opportunities for residents, as well as Trumpets Restaurant and Lounge, which is open to the public.

Homes range from 1,235 to 3,175 square feet, and are priced from the $170,000s to more than $500,000. Presales have begun for 12 new floor plans. Models for these homes are under construction.

To visit the model village, take Eastern Avenue south, two miles past St. Rose Parkway, turn left on Anthem Parkway and then turn right on Alexandria Drive. The sales office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
