Siena opens golf course in Summerlin

Entertainer Tommy Smothers and home shoppers from around the valley recently attended the grand opening of first nine holes of the championship golf course in Siena, an age-qualified community in Summerlin.
"The Quibbling Sibling" Smothers participated in the course's "Closest to the Pin" contest, using his trick yo-yo as a golf ball. Then the entertainer used a real golf ball and club.
"Tommy demonstrated why he is a regular on the pro-am circuit," community project manager Paul Smith said. "He's actually a very good golfer."
Smothers' attempt fell short. Las Vegas resident Jack Thobe won the $2,000 first prize in the 55-and-over category after hitting the ball within 33 inches of the pin.
"I wanted to try out this new course anyway," Thobe said. "Winning the contest was a very exciting bonus."
Randy Keller, who describes himself as a "weekend warrior" golfer, won the $2,000 prize for the under-55 category.
"It was a lucky shot," Keller said. "I'm a craps dealer, so I know the importance of luck."
The event was an incentive for home shoppers to visit the age-qualified community.
One-third of the Mediterranean-style village's 1,900 homes will be built along the fairways of the 18-hole championship golf course, which is due for completion this summer. Five collections of homes offer 14 floor plans. All single-story and detached, the homes range from 1,200 to 3,100 square feet.
Prices start from the mid-$150,000s to more than $400,000.
The community will have a 28,000-square-foot Village Community Center, featuring a ballroom with a theater stage, a catering kitchen, arts and crafts center, business center, computer center, billiard and card rooms, meeting rooms and a library.
A quarter-mile-long lake with 40 feet of waterfalls is the centerpiece of the golf course and the community. It will have a promenade along one side, connected to a system of walking trails. An 11,800-square-foot golf club will include a pro shop, multitiered practice facility and a dining room with a dining patio overlooking the lake and the course. A 15,900-square-foot fitness center will feature exercise equipment; an indoor swimming pool; and locker rooms with saunas, steam and massage rooms.
To visit the sales office, take Sahara Avenue to Town Center Drive and follow the signs. Office hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.Comedian Tommy Smothers, left was one of more than 750 visitors who came to celebrate the grand opening of the golf course in the Siena age-qualified community, located in Summerlin.
