Summerlin promotes resident involvement
For Barbara Hudgins, a Fourth of July celebration wouldn't be complete without a little volunteer work. The Summerlin resident, along with her family, several neighbors and friends, helped with the community's ninth annual Patriotic Parade. "I want to teach my boys that serving is part of life, and the best way to teach them is through example," said Hudgins, who has two sons: Andrew, 8, and Matthew, 6. "If they learn to always take the time to serve others in life, the hours I have donated in service will be well worth it." Since moving to the community in 2000, the Hudgins family has participated and volunteered in nearly all of the activities coordinated by The Summerlin Council, the nonprofit branch of the Summerlin Community Association. "The Hudgins family has a contagious enthusiasm for serving and participating in community events," council events and communications coordinator Rachel Oliphant said. "They, along with their neighbors and friends who also participate and serve in the community, demonstrate a great example of true community spirit." Oliphant said the family recruited 10 people to assist in this year's parade. "I kept telling my friends to think patriotic," Hudgins said. "That is what the Fourth of July is all about, helping others and remembering those who have served in the defense of the freedoms we enjoy." The family also participates in junior sport leagues. Her husband, Wilson, coaches baseball and soccer teams. She said her family, which has lived in several states, enjoys the Summerlin community the most. "The neighborhood is family oriented and there is a comfortable sense of community here that we have not experienced in other locations," she said.
