Design students learn lesson from Summerlin tour

Models serve as field trip for academy program

More than 30 interior design students from the International Academy of Design and Technology recently toured several model homes in Summerlin's newest village, The Paseos.

The tour gave students a behind-the-scenes look at model home decorating, a career path within the interior design field that is particularly active in the Las Vegas Valley, according to Alicia Valair, interior design program chair for the academy.

"Summerlin was an excellent choice for the tour," Valair said, citing the variety of styles within the master-planned community. "It was a fascinating look at the importance of eye-catching design that is so critical within the home sales industry."

A favorite stop among the students was the Granada neighborhood by William Lyon Homes where four models range from 1,991 to 2,548 square feet and start from $437,000 to $501,000. Michele Coseo, senior vice president of Savannah Design Group, a California-based interior design company and contract designer for the home builder, walked the students through the interior design process and answered questions.

"Michele has a unique sense of style that showcases very well," Valair said. "Her design skills, accompanied with her practical work experience and expertise in the latest trends and technologies, made her a well-qualified candidate to educate our students on the do's and don'ts of interior design."

In addition to design concepts, Coseo explained the practicalities of the business.

"The tour was both educational and inspiring," student Barbara Thomas said. "We learned a lot from Michele and we enjoyed touring the beautiful model homes in Summerlin."

The community features more than 50 models ranging from 1,040 to 5,284 square feet.

The Paseos, Summerlin's newest village west of the Las Vegas Beltway, features the greatest concentration of model homes. The 375-acre, mixed-use village features 14 neighborhoods, a 14-acre park and a trail system. An elementary school and worship site are planned.

The academy, located in Henderson, offers two-year and four-year degrees in fashion design, interior design and visual communication.

Developed by The Howard Hughes Corp., an affiliate of General Growth Properties, Summerlin is home to more than 100 neighborhood and village parks, more than 100 miles of trails, houses of worship, shopping centers, medical facilities, cultural facilities and business parks.

Homes are available in a variety of styles, including single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums. Prices start from the mid-$300,000s to more than $2 million. Custom-home sites are priced from the $500,000s. Apartments offer monthly rents starting from the high $800s.
